Nautical Wall Decor
The USS Constitution nautical wall decor is cut into one of my favorite species, Ambrosia Maple. Its a phase I am going through at the moment I believe. The wood grain from this tree is just beautiful so I am hooked. This piece of artwork was done in a similar way as others that were made to appear as if it has a frame but it is one piece of wood. The home decor is made for wall hanging yet it could be used as a wood panel insert if measured properly.
The border of the wall art has a compass that is relief cut to a depth of .1 inches. At first glance it would appear that the compass is shifted slightly to the right, yet it is not off center. The compass artwork was tilted diagonally in order to include as much of the compass into the border as possible. The sailboat at the center of the art is cut an additional .1 inches deep.
The most difficult part of cutting 2.5d relief is the addition of elements like water. Surfaces such as this cannot translate shades, light, or depth very well. Yet here the water beneath the sailboat came out wonderfully and that really made me happy. The stain work around the ship was done a little differently than other works. A slight stressing of the stain was done in order to add more definition to the relief art. All parts of artwork stand out from the surface so that you can feel the work in your fingers.
The dimensions of the work are:
21.75 inches height
20.75 inches width
0.75 inches thick
7 pounds in weight
Please note that this piece is 3/4 of an inch thick and comes in close to 7 pounds. It does come ready to hang and the wire used is heavy duty. So please use a secure surface to hang the artwork from. While this piece is beefy enough to survive a fall, whatever is beneath it most likely will not survive.
