The Join or Die flag originated as a cartoon penned by Benjamin Franklin. It has over time become an icon of the time and future generations adapt its meaning to their time. In the period of Franklin it was believed as a myth rather than science that a snake had to be cut and buried in parts or else it would rejoin and not die. It is interesting to see how this myth played a role in the creation of this flag with the idea of bringing the American colonies together as one whole to fight England in the War of Independence.
This wood plank art has engraved into it a portion of the Declaration of Independence and also a quote from Marquis De Lafayette. The engraving into the wood, or as is commonly called a 2d cut, was done with a 90 degree vbit.
